"In the play, 'A Man for All Seasons,' Sir Thomas More questions Roper about
whether he would level the forest of English laws to punish the Devil. 'What would
you do?' More asks, 'Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?' Roper
affirms, 'I'd cut down every law in England to do that.'

To which More replies: 'And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned
round on you - where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country's
planted thick with laws from coast to coast . . . and if you cut them down . . . d'you
really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd
give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake.'"

-From a speech to the Senate by Russ Feingold, one day before President
Bush signs the USA PATRIOT ACT into law. Feingold was the only
Senator to vote against passage of the Act on October 25, 2001.
