The unit is a narrative written to provide teachers with an accessible account of Eli Whitney’s life and his place in our history. His spirit of inventiveness and accomplishments have made him the best known New Havener. The narrative is readable enough for sixth and eighth grade students; copies are available at the Institute office. Students will gain an understanding of Whitney’s role in American industrial progress and be proud of his relationship to New Haven. The entire learning packet can be used or various parts can be selected, depending on the achievement Level of the students. A teaching schedule precedes sample lesson plans activities, and optional assignments. Handouts and bibliographies are also included.
