In writing, this refers to giving details relating to the senses, and is most often illustrated by talking about food! Of course we can occasionally add food to our rituals, but really, for our purposes sensory appeal means getting descriptive, so that students can build their vocabularies. Because description in French involves not only vocabulary but also the grammar concepts of noun gender and matching adjectives to nouns, I often hesitate to use description much in my beginning classes, in an effort to keep it simple. But as discussed in the previous section on Authentic and Comprehensible Language, that can end up resulting in an over-simplicity that frustrates some students. So the goal here is to find a way to describe and get students to describe without requiring them to master those gender rules.
