The ability to examine, describe and evaluate one's surroundings is a skill that can be refined through teaching. It is in second grade, when children reach seven and eight years old that they begin to notice not only themselves, but also their role in the world around them. They notice that they are part of a society, whether it is in their school, their families or their communities. In second grade, teachers
can
guide students in discovering their world and how to develop their role as a valued member of any group. Children at this age can become critical thinkers, not only about subject matter but how it concerns them. With this unit, second grade students will learn to notice their surroundings by examining children represented through different photographs.
