In this unit, students work with Gary Soto’s Baseball in April to unpack the role media and Latine stereotypes play in the lives of the characters. In doing this work, students are required to examine gender roles and the media that surrounds not only the characters, but themselves. This unit requires students to do research on media of the 1980s and the present moment. As well, students will unpack gender stereotypes in advertising. Students will be analyzing media messages to determine the audience and the impact of stereotypes on Latine identity building. At the start and end of the unit, the students will research different media to determine how significant it is not only to the characters, but to themselves, in forming Latine identity
