"Voices from the Canopy" is a comprehensive 4-week interdisciplinary, project-based curriculum unit that anchors abstract global environmental crises into the immediate, daily lives of 7th and 8th-grade bilingual English Language Learners (ELLs). Operating at the intersection of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), English Language Arts (ELA), and design thinking, this unit challenges students to investigate a hidden global dependency: palm oil. Though ubiquitous—present in roughly 50% of household and consumer goods—its ecological and socioeconomic impacts remain entirely invisible to the average middle-school consumer.
Over twenty instructional days, students transition from consumer detectives to public advocates. The unit culminates in the Canopy Voices Symposium, a public-facing showcase where students present re-engineered, sustainable packaging designs to students and staff members. By framing deforestation as a tangible design problem, the unit accelerates language acquisition through authentic civic action rather than passive worksheets.
