Abbreviations are letters or groups of letters that stand for words or phrases. They are listed as entries in alphabetical order in most dictionaries. To find an abbreviation, look for the spelling of the abbreviation,
not
the word or phrase the abbreviation represents.
Some abbreviations can stand for more than one word. Some can be written with or without periods after the letters of the abbreviation.
