I will invite the students to suggest how and why people celebrate. We will discuss what people do make, and eat, as well as what feelings they express when they celebrate. Then I will ask the students to listen to the introduction of the event that I will have on audio tape. These audio tapes I will make up myself. They will be able to follow along in their booklets. These booklets I will make myself by combining all the guided student reading sheets I have included in this unit. This is done so that we preview the theme title and to assist in setting a purpose for reading this unit. The students will be encouraged to tell why performances and victories might be reasons to celebrate. Then we will discuss holidays children enjoy.
I will then ask my students to share what they know about how people in other countries observe national holidays that celebrate their independence. I will have the students compare and contrast how these holidays and celebrations are similar to and different from the United States' Fourth of July.
The focus will be cultural awareness.
