It is on secret that more students are overweight today than ever before. My student population is no different. For the past seven or eight years, I have had a lunch club for my students. They get their lunch from the cafeteria and bring it back to my classroom. This gives me an opportunity to observe and question students about their food intake. A large majority of the students have no knowledge of a serving size or of a food pyramid. In past years the matter of balanced (healthy) meals and portion size was handled in the Home Economics classes. Presently our school does not have a Home Economics teacher. Students to tally their approximate caloric intake will use the Food Intake Log
that will be completed later. A homework assignment will be for students to find a chart that lists the recommended daily calorie intake depending on their age, height and lifestyle. A chart will be provided in the unit for the teacher.
