The jonah crab is a member of the red crab species. This species which is caught occasionally by lobstermen, is sometimes sold commercially. It is rarely seen along the shore but inhabits deepwater areas, where it construct mud burrows on the sea floor. Many of these burrows are found in the mud substrate of the Long Island Sound. Its coloring is red and it is a slow-moving animal. Reproduction occurs in early winter, and its entire life cycle is spent offshore.
