Another name for the spider crab is the sea spider. This is a large species and the shell of this animal measures about 2 to 3 inches. Its shell is rough and has a dark olive brown grayish brown color. This crab has a slow sluggish movement and makes its home in harbors, bays, sounds, and on muddy or rocky bottoms. The great sea spider which is found from Massachusetts to Texas has a shell which measures about 5 inches long. The largest of this species is the giant spider crab which lives in the deep waters from the coast of Japan to Alaska. It measures about 10 to 12 feet from leg tip to leg tip. Tie body itself can measure about 12 by 18 inches across.
