7. Fine, Elsa Honig. The Afro American Artist . New York: Holt, Rinehardt and Winston, Inc., 1973. Little information on African art, book deals mostly with the present. Well written, provides great overview of the contemporary Black art scene.

8. Heilbut, Tony. The Gospel Sound . New York: Simon and Schuster., 1971. Interesting but does not deal with the spirituals enough.

9. Jackson, George Pullen. White and Negro Spirituals . New York: J.J. Augustin Publisher., 1943. Good comparison between styles of the Black and White music.

10. Locke, Allen. The Negro and His Music . Port Washington N.Y.: Kennikat Press Inc., 1936. Does not deal with the spiritual in depth, deals with Gospel, Blues, Jazz in a general view.

11. Lovell, John. Black Song; The Forge and The Flame . New York: The Macmillan Co.,1972. Very important book. Deals in depth with the Black spiritual. Comprehensive, a must read. Provides great information about the authors of the spirituals.

12. Odum, Howard J. and Johnson Guy, B. The Negro and His Songs . New York: Negro Universities Press.,1925. Excellent source for song text.

13. Oliver, Paul., Harrison, Max., Bolcom, William. Gospel, Blues and Jazz . London: Macmillan Publishing Co., 1980. Shows the different types of music that grew from the spiritual sounds.

14. Patterson, Lindsay. The Afro-American in Music and Art . Publishers agency under the auspices of the association for the study of Afro-American life and history, 1976. Excellent. Shows relationship between art and music.

15. Ringgold, Faith. Tar Beach . New York: Crown Publishing Inc.,1991. Wonderful illustrations, great narrative, very important book to teach narrative tradition. Very necessary to success of this unit.

17. Schwartzman, Myron. Romare Bearden His Life and Art . H. N. Abrams, 1990. Oversized, excellent illustrations.

18. Wheat, Ellen Harkin. Jacob Lawrence: The Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman Series of 1938-40 . Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1991. Perfect book to use with this unit. Informative, interesting reading. Excellent illustrations.
