A large investment of time has already occurred for the teacher who has done everything suggested thus far. Hopefully, a substantial return on this investment will be realized by the students gaining the proficiency required to do everything in the lessons. Another large investment of time will be required for students to go on to a study that seeks to find out what students do with their time, with whom, and how they feel during the course of a full week.
We will not, for obvious reasons, be able to conduct a study as extensive as the Chicago study. For practical reasons we will set up a system of randomly “signaling” students that involves the students themselves. The questionnaire forms are not included in this unit because of copyright considerations. An ample number of questionnaires are available at the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute office, 53 Wall St. One needs only to call and request the desired number of copies. There is much to be gleaned from this study. The data can be analyzed in much the same way as we did in the lessons above (those items which
can
be quantified). Certainly the students and you will learn more about what they are about. If you decide to do it, assure students that the results will not go any further than their own classroom.
