## Rules for Properties of the Real Numbers

Commutative Property for Addition a + b = b + a 100 + 8 = 8 + 100

Commutative Property of Multiplication a x b = b x a 100 x 8 = 8 x 100

Associative Property of Addition a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c (2 + 10) + 6 = 2 +(10= 6 = 18

Associative Property of Multiplication a x (b x c) = (a x b) x c 2 x (10 x 6) = (2 x 10) x 6 = 120

Identity Property for Addition a + 0 = a 5 + 0 =5

Additive Inverse a + (-a) = 0 6 + - 6 = 0

Identity Property for Multiplication a x 1 = 1 x a = a 5 x 1 = 1 x 5 = 5

Inverse Property of Multiplication 1/a, a x 1/a =1/a x a =1 [a does not = 0] 1 x 1/5 = 1/5 x 5

Distributive Property a ( b + c) = a x b + a x c 2 ( 3 + 4) = 2 x 3 + 2 x 4
